The Hawaii Republican Assembly opposes Election Day Registration (EDR) or Same Day Registration for the following reasons:

  • EDR not only fails to protect voter fraud, but actually gives incentives for it.
Our current system allows an abundance of time for people to register to vote prior to Election Day while also allowing adequate time for election officials to verify that the individual meets all of the proper residency requirements. This bill is solving a problem we don’t have and creating a problem we didn’t have before
  • EDR encourages lazy ignorant voting.
If an individual does not have the foresight to register to vote prior to Election Day, how could anyone believe that same individual would have the foresight to research the candidates and issues prior to voting?  This new class of voter would be most likely to follow the latest media hype.
  • EDR will allow for unfair manipulation of election outcomes
EDR will become a road map for organized invasions of neighborhoods on Election Day in order to undermine the true voice of the community (especially state local races) -- results that fair voting and preregistration make possible. Nobody legitimate is being disenfranchised from voting in Hawaii.

Please tell our legislators today to put the brakes on this bad idea.

The subject Bill allows for EDR and voting at a county absentee polling place. Significant fraud has been detected in our elections, especially with the extended voting days and no requirement for picture identification. This change will weaken our one person, one vote process.
